On January 20th, President Donald Trump was sworn into office, kicking off an exciting new chapter for our country. The energy in both the nation’s Capitol and here in the Idaho Capitol was incredible as we celebrated a renewed focus on putting our nation first. President Trump got straight to work, signing executive orders to undo harmful policies from the Biden administration and help everyday Americans.
Here in Idaho, we’re excited to support President Trump’s agenda and work on similar ideas at the state level. Many of his actions reflect what we’ve been striving for, and we’re inspired to keep pushing for good policies that protect our freedoms and strengthen our communities. Together, we’re building a brighter future for Idaho and our country.
Sen. Tammy Nichols
Legislative Recap:

This past week has been full of exciting events, meaningful conversations, and productive legislative work at the Idaho Capitol. We kicked things off with Idaho Potato Day, celebrating one of our state’s most iconic crops. It was a treat to take home a bag of Idaho potatoes and reflect on the importance of agriculture to our state.
In the legislative arena, I introduced several key bills. My anti-swatting bill was introduced into committee and will have a full hearing on Monday. Swatting is a dangerous prank where false emergency calls are made to provoke a law enforcement response. While it’s currently classified as a misdemeanor in Idaho under false police reporting, my bill adds stronger penalties to deter this reckless behavior. You can read the full bill here.
Rep. Heather Scott introduce our bill aimed at ensuring transparency about what’s in our food. Learn more about it here. Additionally, I introduced the “Free the Chickens” bill, which focuses on allowing people to raise chickens on their property. You can find details about it here.
We were also privileged to welcome the Idaho Historical Society, which showcased the USS Idaho Silver Service collection. This included two beautiful silver trays gifted to the USS Idaho as part of a tradition of presenting silver to Navy ships. Many don’t realize Idaho’s deep connection to naval history, including the five USS Idaho ships and the Navy Acoustic Research Detachment submarine base in Northern Idaho—our own version of Area 51!
On Saturday, I had the honor of attending the Boise March for Life, where the weather was as uplifting as the event itself. Dr. Francis, OB/GYN and CEO of AAPLOG, delivered an incredible keynote, sharing three powerful stories that shaped her pro-life passion. I had the chance to speak with her about the pro-life legislation we’re preparing to introduce. Former Senator Winder was also recognized for his outstanding work in this area, reinforcing that saving and supporting babies and women remains at the heart of this movement.
This week reminded me how much we can accomplish when we come together for Idahoans. From protecting life and improving food transparency to celebrating our history and Idaho’s iconic potatoes, we’re moving forward on so many fronts. Thank you for staying engaged as we work to make a positive difference for our state!

Hi Vicki, thanks for the feedback. If you look at the actual bill, it's 4 chickens per .02 of an acre and the hoa has the ability to allow roosters or not and setting guidelines on how they are kept to eliminate those concerns.
Sen. Nichols — As chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, you’re probably the most knowledgeable person to answer (or investigate) this question…
Do you know whether Idaho’s potato crop is sprayed or otherwise treated with glyphosate (aka Roundup)? If so, our beautiful state crop could be poisoning those who eat our tubers 🥔.
Thank you!
